It all started back in 2001 after I found myself recently divorced and my kids are in their late teens and quite independent. I was working for USA TODAY as a district sales manager, a very good job that I enjoyed quite a bit. However I started to feel a sort of cliche sense of “caught in the rat race” and I was yearning for a life that was more interesting, exciting, adventurous. You see, I got married very young and started raising a family at age 21 when my son was born. That was all great but now I am young dad whose kids are all grown and pretty much on their own and I started thinking that I may have missed out on some things back then when I was only 18, married and trying to be a responsible provider for my family. Most people in their late teens and early 20’s are going to college and/or traveling the world and really enjoying their new found freedom by doing all the things that are fun and exciting…..adventurous. Now, at this point, I feel like I have the circumstances to start a new chapter in my life. OK so I am in my mid 40’s but that is not too old to start something new, after all I am healthy and I have the freedom to do what I want. For years I have dreamed of doing what I love most and making that occupation; what I love most is scuba diving and traveling. How cool would it be to live at diving resort locations and spend my work days scuba diving and spending the rest of the time living the resort life. It would be like being on vacation full time! So, that dream became my goal, I wanted to become a scuba instructor and live at popular vacation spots where it is summer all year around and live the dream life of doing what I love for a living. Can it really be done? How do start? Where do I go? Who do I need to know? Well, in this new blog I will explain how I went about achieving my dream, what happened along the way, where I am now and where I am going. Additionally I will relate my experiences both good and bad and describe what it is like to live the life of a traveling scuba instructor.
